During a company tour through Berlin, HHL M.Sc. and MBA students discovered the Berlin startup scene and met with HHL alumni.
40 curious and highly motivated HHL MBA and M.Sc. students hit the road to Berlin on Monday, March 12, 2018, to gain insights about into the fast moving and highly innovative start-up world. Kindly supported by HHL alumni, working in this scene, the agenda of this one day “Company Tour” included three exciting organizations, which are already firmly established in the Berlin startup scene and reflect its diverse facets.
The first stop was at the Lufthansa Innovation Hub (LIH) – a startup which was founded in 2014 by the Lufthansa Group and that works on smart consumer and commerce solutions for the aviation future. AirlineCheckins.com is one of the customized 360 degrees solutions for air passengers. This platform bundles, automates and thus simplifies the check-in process of more than 100 airlines. HHL alumnus Matthias Fuchs (MSc9) opened the doors to the LIH – where he is working as a Venture Development Manager – for the HHL students.
At HitFox Group, the second stop, the students received an impression how a company builder works. The Berlin company, which was co-founded inter alia by HHL alumni Tim Koschella (K21) and Hendrik Krawinkel (MSc3), focuses clearly on digital markets: over 1,000 employees on three continents work on innovation in the fields of adtech, healthcare, big data or fintech. At the Berlin healthcare company builder “Heartbeat Labs”, HHL-Alumni Hendrik Krawinkel (MSc4) and Benedikt Ernst (MSc3) welcomed the students and presented the development of digital innovation in the healthcare sector and the challenges involved. Afterwards at lunch, the students had the opportunity to get to know and talk to other HHL alumni, also working at Heartbeat Labs and to get first-hand information about their daily business.
Without a doubt, another highlight was the visit of Auto1 – one of the few German unicorns with a current value of 2.9 billion euro and thus the number 2 in Europe right after the Swedish music streaming service Spotify. HHL alumnus and co-founder Christopher Muhr (MSc1) has made decisive contributions to the start-up’s success. Dr. Moritz Lück, Head of Operations, and Robert Lasek, Head of Sales & Managing Director Germany, introduced Europe`s number one online marketplace for buying and selling cars. Auto1 focusses on B2B relations, which means the service is specifically tailored to address exclusively professional dealers and is thus a service “by dealer for dealer”.
The students were impressed by the success and the growth of Auto1 and had many questions. They finally got exclusive insights into the sacred halls of the successful startup. Hence, the company tour offered varied insights into the Berlin startup scene. We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to our HHL alumni for these interesting impressions.
